Julia Castillo-Gonzalez
Post-doctoral fellow

Julia obtained her degree in Biology from the University of Granada, followed by a Master’s in Biotechnology. She completed her PhD in Biomedicine in 2024 at the Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine López-Neyra (Spanish National Research Council) under the supervision of Dr González-Rey, supported by a competitive FPU fellowship. Her doctoral research focused on investigating the role of the neuropeptide cortistatin in neuroimmune dysregulation and blood-brain barrier breakdown in ischemic stroke. During her PhD, she conducted a six-month research stay at the DNF with Dr Hirt, funded by competitive FPU short-stay and EMBO short-term fellowships.
Julia has now begun a postdoctoral position in Dr Hirt’s lab, funded by a postdoctoral fellowship from the Spanish Ramón Areces Foundation, focusing on the role of short-chain fatty acids in microbiota dysregulation and the prognosis of post-stroke infections. Her expertise includes animal models of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, microsurgery techniques, microscopy analyses, transcriptomics, and both in vitro and in vivo blood-brain barrier models.
