After axonal injury, severed axons degenerate within a day in many species, including humans, monkeys, and mice. However, in other species, they fail to degenerate, and their synapses remain functionally preserved. Here, Maria identified the local translatome required to functionally sustain these synapses, using a model of impaired Wallerian degeneration in Drosophila.
