After axonal injury, axons separated from their cell bodies engage an evolutionarily conserved programmed axon degeneration pathway to initiate the degeneration within a day. Blocking this pathway results in severed projections which remain morphologically preserved for weeks. When evoked, they continue to elicit a postsynaptic behavior, a phenomena defined as preservation of circuit integrity. Here, we explored the underlying maintenance mechanisms. Maria isolated and characterised axonal and synaptic mRNAs locally translated that are required for the preservation of circuit integrity. She was supported by Leonardo Restivo (Neuro-Behavioral Analysis Unit, Neuro-BAU) and the laboratory of Marco Terenzio (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, OIST, Japan). Congratulations to Maria, and a big thank you to all our collaborators! Our preprint is on bioRxiv, an open-access repository. Preprints are not peer-reviewed, but undergo basic screening and are checked against plagiarism.

The lab provided several fly stocks enabling the Juhász lab to simultaneously manipulate axons with the QF/QUAS and glia with the Gal4/UAS binary systems.
